Rocky castle  - Chřibský castle (Dolní Karlštejn)

From the top of the former castle you can have a very nice view of the surrounding area. In the southeast you can see Chřibský hill and in the south Studenec hill. Chřibsk.castle was probably established in the 14th century by the Michalovec´s clan. As well as other castles in the region, this one was built as a protection for tradesmen going towards  Lužice. Later it was probably used as a seat of a court officer from Chřibská who had a place of execution on Justice hill about 1579. Apparently, it was destroyed in the 15th century because it wasn´t fortified enough. It´s possible it was abandoned without a fight. According to the evidence that was found, it probably, was destroyed by fire. It most likely happened some time around 1425 in the hussite era or during a crusade of lužické. The location of the castle was also ideal as a resting place on journeys between other castles in the area, ie. Kamenický castle, Fredevald, Falkenštejn and Tolštejn. Another hypothesis for its existence is that it was used as a place of refuge by wealthy travelers during the crudades to Sasko or Lužice. Also it's possible that it was used as a shelter without any special fortification protecting people (prospectors or miners) against robbers and thieves.

Location:  2 kms northwest from Chřibská Severozápadně od Chřibské

Directions:  From Chřibská you go towards Dolní Chřibská. At pension Rozcestí turn right and follow the asphalt road up to the crossroad turning to Tokáň (no entrance sign) and leading further to Doubice, where you will find the tourist centre of the National park Czech Switzerland, "U Sloupu". On the right there is a steep trail up to Chřibský castle.
