Grosser Winterberg (Big Winterhill)

The hotel and restaurant „Big Winterhill“ is the highest built homestead in Saxon Switzerland, located very close to Schmilka. The hotel is situated in the zone of the National park that means no mounts are allowed to drive in. But for the guests the „transport service“ is arranged from the parking lot in Schmilka. From the top of the hill you can have  an amazing view, when the weather is nice and clear you can see as far as Dresden! And the magic experience of the sunset above the Schrammstein....The romantic visitors will love it. The building of Swiss style was built in 1848  as a hunting-lodge. At the end of the 19th century the right  wing was additionally built and the house was opened to public. From that time the house  makes use of hotel with holiday bar. The big advantage of the restaurant  is the food from the region, the biologically grown products are preferred. Coffee and tea are imported from far countries.  And there is always something for vegetarians and vegans as well !

Attractions: the first public pub was situated in the right wing in the 1st floor above the kitchen. The food supply for „Big winterhill“ was arranged by  horse-carriages, during the summer the staff lived in the upper floors. Next to the stables there was the piggery where the pigs and hens were kept. The food was stored in a two-wall ice house. During the spring a part between the walls was always filled with the sawdust and the ice piles from near-by lake and so the house was kept cold for the whole summer.

Location: Schmilka

Directions:  difference in altitude 450 metres. If you follow the green touristic trail  you can be there in about an hour. Back to Schmilka you can follow the red touristic trail where you can enjoy wonderfull views.

November – March: Saturday+Sunday 11.00 – min. 16.OO h., closed during Christmas
