Rocky castle - Kyjovský hrádek (Horní Karlštejn)

The access to the ruined castle is very interesting experience. The trail leads through narrow paths in the rocks and up steep stairs. At the top you are rewarded with a beautiful view.  This castle is considered the largest of the castles in the region built for the protection of the trade routes. It is also the most mysterious one because of its past. The castle is said to be built in the 14th century. The castle was surrounded by two moats and a wooden wall. It was impossible to get a carriage inside. The castle's height reached probably 40 metres.  Research from the 1980´s showed that this castle was more an old housing estate than a castle. The people who tried to find the precious metals in the area, e.g. Gold or iron ore, settled here. They probably didn´t find much gold or iron ore so the place was abandoned and we are left with only the legends of Kyjovský castle.

Location:  Kyjov

Directions: You get to the castle by following the yellow tourist trail leading from Kyjov along the stream Křinice. Climbing up to the castle is very steep.
Opening hours: opened throughout the year, no admission
