Castle´hill (Kamenický castle)

On the hill above the town Česká Kamenice (formerly Kamenice) at about 530 m altitude there is the rest of the castle Castle´hill, formerly called Kamenice. From the wooden tower you can see the ruins of the fortification and see why we say the town Česká Kamenice is in the palm of the hand. You can also have a wonderful view of the Lužické mountains, České středohoří and Czech-Saxon Switzerland. We are not sure when the castle was originally built but according to the estimations it was some time at the beginning of the 15th century. The owners of the castle, the Vartemberks, didn´t have  good relations with Lužičané and so they often fought with each other. The castle was conquered and burnt out several times and the Vartemberks were forced to sell the castle because of financial difficulties. The ownership of the castle changed hands several times till the 30 years war when Banerś swedish crew moving from Žitava to Ćeská Lípa and Děčín conquered the castle in 1639. The castle was burnt out and destroyed and it stayed unchanged till recently. At the end of the 19th century local civic clubs decided to open the castle to the public. During the 1930s there was a holiday restaurant and a knights hall decorated with historical relics and coats of arms. After World War 2 Castle hill began to waste away till 1995 when the walls were stabilized and a new wooden tower was built.

Directions:  From the square you follow the green tourist trail to Castle´hill. The trail then continues to Kamenický Šenov (where there is a glass-making museum) and than further to Manor rock where famous fairy-tale "A proud Princess" was made into a movie.
