Chřibská

Village description

Chřibská

On the border of preserved landscape areas Lužické mountains, Labské sandstones and National park Bohemian Switzerland there is a glass-making town Chřibská. The scenery there is hilly and probably that is reason why the town is called so, it comes from the word "chřib", meaning the hill. The town was probably found by Srbové who hid in the region from the revenge of german emperor. The history dates back to 1144 which is proved by found building stone with this era on it. In 1570 Chřibská became the town. In the beginning of the 15th century the first glass-making works started up and it works till today. It is considered as the oldest functional glass making factory in the central Europe. During its history the glass from the whole area became famous and even nowadays it is exported to the whole world. You can see the art of glass makers in the local glass-making museum. In the town many beautiful buildings were built and nowadays they are used for recreation purposes.

Chřibská is a suitable place for touristic and cycling trips to the surroundings.  The visit of Pravčická gate, the biggest natural bridge in Europe,  the boatride through the passes of Kamenice river as well as adventurous trips to former robber´s castles offering an amazing view of the surrounding will be definitely very impressive experience for you. The nearest rock castle is Chřibský castle, about 1 km north of Dolní Chřibská. From the hill Spravedlnost (Justice) you can have a beautiful view of the undulating country full of the hills and at the hill-side of the hill Plešivec you can see the small waterfall. In winter it is close to the ski area Jedlová where you can go either down-hill or cross-country skiing. In local sport club you can also go climbing on the climbing wall. One of the most interesting sights is the church of St. George from 1596 that was completely reconstructed in 1999 - 2002. In the square next to the town house with no. 22, there is the native house of T. Haenke, the noted doctor, traveller, botanist and discoverer of the lotus "viktorie královská". In the first floor there is a homeland study´ museum. Other interesting buildings are e.g. the spice mill built in 1884 that was working with original equipment till 70´s of the 20th century and was proclaimed the technical monument.
