Village description

Jiřetín pod Jedlovou

Jiřetín pod Jedlovou can be found about 5 km southwest of Varnsdorf in Preserved landscape area Lužické mountains. Thank to wonderful scenery, interesting sights and sport possibilities it is the centre people search for throughout the year.
The owner of the Tolštejn´s manor Georg from Schleinitz started to build the town because of discovering the silver ore around the castle Tolštejn. (till 1945 Jiřetín was called Sankt Georgental after Schleinitz). Silver mining was never profitable enough and so people did textile production and made linen for living. Before World War I. the factory for sharpening and glazing  semiprecious stones was found.
Jiřetín can be proud of its nice tidy square. In the square you  can find the Church of Holy Trinity, a splendid building of the presbytery , the sandstone column with the statue of St. Lawrence and the park with fountain. There is also the information centre in the square.
Silver mining is reminded in a museum exhibition, on an educational trail and in a gallery. The mining museum is in the house of  former presbytery. The gallery of Jan Evangelista is situated on the periphery of the village at the road to Horní Podluží. It is 360 m long and is accessible with a guide during summer.
We recommend to walk on the green touristic trail up the Cross hill that is bordered by 14 stops of the Way of the Cross, on the top there is a chapel. From there you can continue up to Jedlová mountain and then follow the red touristic trail to the ruins of the castle Tolštejn. The whole interesting circle is done by going down the asphalt road back to the village.
Building  the viewpoint on Jedlová mountain, which is the highest peak of Děčín´s region, contributed very much to the tourism increase. After climbing up you will be happy to find the refreshment right next to the viewpoint. After long-term dilapidating both buildings were recently rebuilt and so you can enjoy the view of Krušné hory as far as Krkonoše again.
The village gave the impulse for foundation of Microregion Tolštejn and at the same time to the project Toštejn´s manor whose main goal is to support the tourism in the area of Šluknovský headland.
In the east side of the village there is a summer sport areal available for the tourists and local people. From the rich equipment we can name the grass football field, tennis courts, the pool with switchbacks, the beach volleyball court and minigolf.
Jiřetín is also the right choice for the skiers. You will be fascinated by trails for cross-country skiing and the ski areal on Jedlová mountain with two skiing lifts, 1200 m and 800 m long.
