Village description
Rumburk
The town of Rumburk can be found in the most northern part of the Czech republic. The surrounding is mainly hilly country with pure nature. Its characterization is also made up by the isolated hills in the surrounding that gives you many chances for the trips. The whole region is a great place for cycling lovers as well as keen tourists and in winter there are many trails for cross-country skiing. Not far from Rumburk you can find the hill Dymník with the look out of the same name and the restaurant where you can have an amazing view of the wide surrounding area that is also called "the Czech Netherlands". The name means the antithesis of the"upper country" that is situated in the south and southeast, behind the edges of Lužické mountains with the dominating features you know from the postcards such as Jedlová, Pěnkavčí hill and Luž. At the same time it also expresses the character of the whole scenery.
The first mention about Rumburk´s existence dates back to 1298. At that time it was already a market settlement so it had one of the basic characters of the medieval town whose statute was supported in 1377. Since 1566, when the renaissance castle replaced the old fortress, the town, that was mainly created by the wooden houses, became the new seat of the manor Tolštejn. The main stimulations of the development and increase of the town were connected with many business trails that led through Rumburk. Among the most important business trails so called salt trail, leading from german Halle to the czech country, belonged. In following centuries the increase and the settlement of the town was influenced by the production of precious metals and later by linen production. As the time passed the new trades were added, the law to brew the beer and deal in a salt and wine... etc. Anyway, the linen production influenced the region for the next centuries. As the foreign investors came into the region, the long-term development of the town was ensured and the high repute of the weaving production spread into the whole world.
During the whole development of the town many important sights were found and we recommend to visit them. One of the valuable sights is Loreta, the most northern building of its kind in Europe, that was built in 1704-1709. The whole building was built in already standing paradise court of the capuchin´s monastery with the new Church of St. Lawrence according to the project of famous J.L. Hildebrandt. The legend says that the house Virgin Mary used to live in Nazareth, was taken by the angels to the town of Loreto. Above this legendary house the temple was raised up and so it becamed the well-known pilgrimage place of the world. Rumburk´s Loreta is the copy of its Italian original. In contrast to the original, that is all made from the marble, the Rumburk´s Loreta is built from the sandstone. The excursions are held in Loreta. The tours are in Czech but also in German. Do not forget to visit the Church of St. Bartoloměj built in 1352. Originally the church was wooden and later in 1545 the new one was built and was saved till today as well as the chapel of St. Jan Křtitel on Strážný hill. You can walk through the "curious street" where you find the original folk buildings from the half of the 18th century that are in monumental preserved area.
