Sněžník

The small village Sněžník is mainly the centre for the sports-minded visitors. You can find there many touristic and cycling trails, in winter time you can enjoy cross-country skiing at one of many maintained trails to several touristic attractions in the area. Today many houses also serve as the pensions for the tourists.

Sněžník was found in 1653 as a village for forest workers, in World War II. there was the camp of French captives. In 1883 the first cyclers arrived from Dresden on the old-time bicycles.  

The village is located under the highest mesa in the Czech republic, Děčínský Sněžník. On its peak in the altitude 723 ms above the sea the stone view tower was built. From the view tower you can have a view of Děčín, Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland and České Středohoří. When the weather is clear you can see as far as Ještěd, Bezděz or even to Dresden.

In 1936 for the first time in the history of the Czech republic the televisual signal from the olympic games in Berlin got successfully caught. According to the legend there is a treasure under the mesa which opens up only once a year.  

Sněžník is situated in immediate vicinity the state border with Germany. The frontier crossing Sněžník – Rosenthal operates all the year for the tourists and cyclists. Thank to this fact you can go for a trip to the Saxon Switzerland which is as beautiful as the country on the czech side of the border.

In the Sněžník area there is the race of dog-teams held every winter. Traditionally the Championship of the Czech republic in sprint is held there and it is also counted towards the European cup.
